Sarshe Ilish Recipe


  • Hilsha/Ilish fish: 3 piece
  • Mustard seed: 2 tbsp
  • Green chili: 2 or 3
  • Turmeric powder 1 tsp
  • Black Cumin Seed: 1 pinch
  • Salt (as per taste)
  • Mustard oil: 1 tbsp

Hilsa is the most popular fish with Bengalis and Oriyas, the national fish of Bangladesh. Any dishes made from Ilish becomes Bengal delicacy. It is basically a sea fish but it lay eggs in rivers. Hilsa is caught from river as well as sea but those are caught from river with egg inside considered to be more tasty. This fish has its own special aroma and it requires a little spices to cook.

Procedure : Sarshe Ilish Recipe

  • Soak mustard seed in water for 1 hour.
  • Clean the pieces of fish in water and drain it out. Do not rub the pieces at the time of cleaning as fish may lose its taste and aroma.
  • Marinate the fish with 1 tsp of salt and 1/2 tsp of turmeric for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Mean while grind mustard seed with a green chilli in to a smooth paste.
  • Heat oil in a pan. Fry the pieces lightly (Fry till it turn light brown,it may take 3 to 5 minutes).
  • Flip the pieces and fry another side in the same method.
  • Keep the pieces aside and in the same pan add black cumin seed,green chillies and stir for a while. Then add mustard paste,turmeric and salt. Mix them well.
  • Add a cup of water and bring it to boil.
  • Add pieces of fried fish.
  • When the sauce is thicken,turn off heat.

Serve hot with steamed rice.
